Overview

The Blur Rug, by Spanish brand nanimarquina, is characterized by the sequence of geometric shapes and repetition, definitive hallmarks of Paris based brothers and designers Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec. Their mastery, meticulousness, and tireless ability to always go a step further, has lead them to work on Blur, a collection that offers two different readings. When viewing the rug from afar, an indefinite, unfocused surface is apparent, that gives its name to the collection. Nevertheless, upon approaching the rug, lines and rhythmic rhombuses in different proportions are revealed, in the purest kinetic style. This blurred effect has been achieved by inverting the sense in which the kilims are traditionally woven, which makes the process much more laborious. This change in weaving causes the lines to be blurred, mixing two colours unevenly, creating an aged rug, reminiscent of the past.

Extraordinarily rare, Ghazni wool is produced in a very specific region of Afghanistan. The thin wool fiber can reach up to 12" in length and presents a subtle undulation that is similar to fur, offering a rich softness and density. The wool fiber is hand-spun which leads to a naturally irregular texture and color. The exceptional length and elastic structure provide high resistance for weaving, resulting in beautiful rugs that age well. The hand weaving technique is renown for its lack of pile. Requiring expert knowledge, skilled artisans are necessary for this traditional method of weaving that produces flat rugs with highly detailed patterns.

Nani Marquina established nanimarquina in 1987 with a clear goal: to design unique and surprising handcrafted rugs. The idea of blending contemporary design to traditional rugs was well received and soon nanimarquina embarked on the adventure of outsourcing production to those countries that offered cultural value and unlimited possibilities for rug craftsmanship.
