Overview

An admirer of sculptor Alexander Calder, German designer Bernard Schottlander created the MANTIS series of lamps in 1951. Much like the crouching stance of the Praying Mantis, the Mantis Floor Lamp sits ever so gently on the floor, exuding elegance and minimalism. The combination of the thin steel legs and stem and the slightly curved aluminum shade add a delicate touch to an otherwise utilitarian object. A switch on the cord, as well as an adjustable stand, make for a user-friendly and multi-functional piece. Movement is intrinsic to all of Schottlander’s work : an artist, an engineer and in no small measure a handyman, he devised a clever system of counterweights combined with a series of strong and flexible metal bars. The shade is also unique: like an acrobat suspended in midair, it is made from aluminum using spinning and chasing techniques that are part of the metalworker’s inventory of skills, but to which he has brought his sculptor’s eye to create a helical movement.
