Overview

The Ayno Lamp Series by Stefan Diez for Midgard is the first design of a new Midgard lamp since the 1950s. German industrial designer Stefan Diez is testing the boundaries between the origin and status quo of adjustable lighting. Radically reduced to the essentials, made primarily from recycled materials (steel and plastics), the Ayno Lamp meets all the requirements of design, technology and sustainability. It won the German sustainability award in design 2021.

The lamp’s central characteristic is a slim, flexible fiberglass rod to which a thin cable is fixed with two continuously movable adjustment rings. Due to its inherent tension, the rod will always return to its original position. By sliding the two adjustment rings at top and bottom, the fiberglass rod is bent into the desired position and the light is directed where needed. The radius of the arc is adjusted using the adjustment rings. Through the use of LED and low voltage technology, the textile cable’s diameter is reduced to a minimum. It also allows the design of an ultra-light, cone shaped lampshade. The lamp can be assembled without tools and is easy to maintain.

The story of Midgard is associated with the Bauhaus movement. Midgard constructed the first articulated steering lamps, a true innovation at the beginning of the 20th century. When the Bauhaus moved into its new buildings in Dessau in 1926, Midgard lamps were part of the interior.

Stefan Diez

Stefan Diez’ introduction to furniture design started in 1991 when he started an apprenticeship as a cabinet maker. Diez went on to study at Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design in 1996 where he attained a Diploma in Industrial Design. He founded his studio in 2003 in Munich. From 2007 to 2014 he was Professor for Industrial Design at the HFG Karlsruhe. Since 2018 Stefan Diez is Professor for Industrial Design at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Diez works intensively with materials, technology and is passionate in his quest to fathom out their limitations. Together with his office they develop products that are precise, yet simple and above all are meant to meet human needs. Stefan Diez belongs to the first generation of designers who were trained in a craft and, during their studies, also started to experiment with digital tools and are therefore at home in both worlds. His work results from an approach that uses both analogue and digital methods and accumulates experiences that are applied in development and production processes. Since 2003 Stefan Diez has worked in various fields of design ranging from furniture and tableware to industrial design, as well as exhibition design for companies like Arita, Authentics, Burgbad, e15, Emu, Gandia Blasco, Hay, Magis, Moroso, Rosenthal, Thonet, Vibia, Wagner, Wilkhahn and others. Some of his products have received international design awards, among others the “Designpreis der Bundesrepublik Deutschland”, the “IF Gold award” and the “red dot best of the best award”.
