Born in Japan in 1956, Naoto Fukasawa graduated from the Tama Art University in 1980. In the same year, he joined Seiko Epson, where he was responsible for advanced development design. In 1989, he moved to the United States, where he joined ID Two (now IDEO San Francisco). Having honed his craft for seven years, focusing mainly on Silicon Valley industries, he returned to Japan in 1996. He established and headed up IDEO’s Tokyo office and in 2003 created his own studio NAOTO FUKASAWA DESIGN. He is known for his streamlined industrial products which defy categorization. Integrating an environmental approach with practical application, his designs promote social good. Fukasawa’s award-winning design strategy is the concept of “Outline,” promoting a simple, unified harmony between object and user. Currently, Fukasawa designs for a wide range of leading brands worldwide, including MUJI. His designs span a wide variety of fields, from precision electronic equipment to furniture, interior spaces and architecture. Fukasawa is the curator of The Japan Folk Crafts Museum. He has been awarded the title of Royal Designer for Industry (Royal Society of Arts). He was awarded the Isamu Noguchi Award in 2018.
