Overview

The Ayno Lamp Series by Stefan Diez for Midgard is the first design of a new Midgard lamp since the 1950s. German industrial designer Stefan Diez is testing the boundaries between the origin and status quo of adjustable lighting. Radically reduced to the essentials, made primarily from recycled materials (steel and plastics), the Ayno Lamp meets all the requirements of design, technology and sustainability. It won the German sustainability award in design 2021.

The lamp’s central characteristic is a slim, flexible fiberglass rod to which a thin cable is fixed with two continuously movable adjustment rings. Due to its inherent tension, the rod will always return to its original position. By sliding the two adjustment rings at top and bottom, the fiberglass rod is bent into the desired position and the light is directed where needed. The radius of the arc is adjusted using the adjustment rings. Through the use of LED and low voltage technology, the textile cable’s diameter is reduced to a minimum. It also allows the design of an ultra-light, cone shaped lampshade. The lamp can be assembled without tools and is easy to maintain.

The story of Midgard is associated with the Bauhaus movement. Midgard constructed the first articulated steering lamps, a true innovation at the beginning of the 20th century. When the Bauhaus moved into its new buildings in Dessau in 1926, Midgard lamps were part of the interior.
